Several times per year Action Landscaping receives a phone call from a homeowner who has already paid to have less than acceptable work done at their home by another landscape contractor. They might have had a block retaining wall installed improperly and is already leaning out. They might have had a yard graded improperly and now it hold water. Whatever the reason, don’t let this happen to you. When hiring any landscape contractor, be sure to ask these important questions.
How many years has your company been in business (under the current name)? There are companies who might have been in business for 20 years but have changed their name several times to declare bankruptcy or run from a lawsuit.
Do you carry Workman’s Comp and Liability Insurance? Ask for a copy. Any legitimate company will be able to provide proof of insurance.
What type of equipment will be used to complete this project? Do you rent it or do you own it? Most landscape contractors own their own fleet of various trucks & equipment including bobcats, excavators, dump trucks, etc. If they have to rent it might be an indication of an unprofitable company who will not be in business long.
Does the contractor have a showroom or office? A PO Box mailing address with only a cell phone listed on a business card is a good indication of a company who either hasn’t been or plans to be around for long. Don’t be afraid to ask for a meeting at the contractors office to finalize details for your project. If their office and material yard are not organized & trucks are not clean and clutter free; then likely your job site won’t be either.
Ask for a list of references in the area who have had similar projects completed. Actually go look at the projects and meet the homeowner if they are home. Don’t be fooled by picture books-with the internet, pictures can easily be stolen from another contractors gallery of work and reproduced.
