Whether you need screening from your neighbor, a roadway or just want some extra privacy, it can be done with landscaping.  A great way to use landscaping for privacy is with trees. The climate in St.Louis, Mo supports the growth of a variety of evergreen trees.  In full sun applications, trees such as Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Junipers, Emerald Green Arborvitae, and Green Giant Arborvitae provide contrasting colors, shapes, and textures.  You can also layer deciduous bushes such as Knockout Roses or Dwarf Burning Bush to add seasonal color.

Start with trees about 5′-6′ tall and plant them about 10Ft on center to allow for future growth.  Planting trees much bigger than that requires too much of the root system to be cut when balled in burlap for resale causing a higher chance of losing the tree.  Be sure to plant the top of the root ball about 2 inches out of the ground and amend any clay soil with good topsoil or compost mix.

Topping with mulch helps hold moisture in the summer months.  Having access to a ball cart will also benefit the installer.  The root balls of a big tree are heavier than they look! Most evergreen trees will grow about 1 Ft per year so in no time you’ll have the landscaping screen you desire.
